The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card is the only dedicated hotel loyalty credit card currently available to new applicants in the UK. It earns Marriott Bonvoy points on everyday spending, gives you automatic elite status, and adds a free hotel night each year if you spend enough. For anyone who stays at Marriott hotels regularly, it can be one of the more rewarding cards in the American Express range, and its £95 fee is modest by Amex standards.
This review explains how the card earns, what the status and Free Night Award are worth, how Bonvoy points can be turned into airline miles, and how it compares with the other cards in our series, including the Amex Gold and Amex Platinum. Details were checked against American Express’s own pages in October 2026.
Representative example: Representative 52.5% APR variable. Based on an assumed credit limit of £1,200 at a purchase rate of 29.1% p.a. (variable) and an annual fee of £95. 18+, subject to status. Terms apply.

Who Is the Marriott Bonvoy Amex For?
This card is built for people who stay at Marriott hotels at least a few times a year, whether for work or leisure. Marriott Bonvoy is the largest hotel loyalty programme in the world, covering brands from Courtyard and Moxy to Westin, W, JW Marriott, The Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis. If you already collect Bonvoy points, the card adds a steady stream of extra points, a head start on elite status and a potential free night each year.
It is less suitable if you rarely stay in hotels, prefer other hotel groups, or mainly want airline miles. Bonvoy points can be converted to airline miles, but the conversion rate makes it a slower route to Avios than the BA Amex cards or the Amex Gold. As with any card, it only makes sense if you pay in full every month.
How You Earn Marriott Bonvoy Points
You earn 2 Marriott Bonvoy points for every full £1 spent on the card, and American Express awards 6 points per £1 on eligible spending at Marriott properties. Points go straight into your Bonvoy account, so there is no separate rewards balance to manage. When you stay at a Marriott hotel and pay with the card, you will normally also earn the points Marriott awards for the stay itself as a Bonvoy member.
You can add supplementary cards for family members or a partner so their spending counts too, and you can earn bonus points by referring friends who are approved, at least 9,000 points each, up to 90,000 points a year. As with other Amex cards, balance transfers, cash withdrawals, interest and fees do not earn points, and a non-sterling transaction fee applies to foreign currency spending.
The welcome offer
Marriott currently advertises a welcome bonus of 20,000 Bonvoy points on this card, and larger limited-time offers appear from time to time. Check the current offer and its spending requirement on the American Express website before you apply. You will not qualify if you hold, or have held in the past 24 months, any other personal American Express card. You also need a Marriott Bonvoy membership number, which is free to set up.
Elite Status and Elite Night Credits

Cardmembers receive Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status automatically. Silver brings modest benefits such as bonus points on stays and priority late check-out when available. The more valuable step is Gold Elite, which American Express gives you when you spend £15,000 on the card in a year. Gold Elite typically adds enhanced room upgrades when available, a welcome gift of points or amenities at many hotels, a higher points bonus on stays and later check-out. The exact benefits are set by Marriott and can change, so check the current tier benefits on the Marriott Bonvoy website.
The card also gives you 15 Elite Night Credits on approval and again every calendar year. These count towards the nights you need to qualify for Marriott status tiers, so they reduce the number of actual nights you have to stay to reach a higher level. For someone who stays 20 to 30 nights a year, 15 free credits can make a real difference to which tier they reach. For someone who stays only a handful of nights, they are unlikely to lift you beyond what the card already gives you.
The Free Night Award

If you spend £25,000 on the card in a Cardmembership anniversary year, you receive a Free Night Award. It can be used for a one-night stay at a participating Marriott Bonvoy hotel where the standard redemption price is 25,000 points or less. Some hotels charge resort fees, which are not covered.
Marriott uses dynamic pricing for reward nights, so the hotels available for 25,000 points or less change by date. Off-peak dates and city hotels outside the most popular periods tend to give the best results. Used well, a free night can be worth more than the card’s annual fee on its own; used at a hotel you would not otherwise have booked, it is worth much less. Check the award’s expiry date when it arrives and plan around it.
£25,000 is a high threshold, equivalent to just over £2,000 a month. Many households will not reach it naturally, and you should never overspend to try. If you would not get there, value the card on its earning and status alone.
How to Use Marriott Bonvoy Points

The most straightforward use of Bonvoy points is free hotel nights. American Express says Bonvoy points can be used at more than 6,500 hotels and resorts in over 120 countries with no blackout dates. Its own examples include one night at a Category 5 hotel such as The Westin Grand Berlin for 35,000 points, or a long-weekend stay at a Category 1 hotel for 15,000 points. Because pricing is dynamic, always check the live points price for your dates.
A useful habit is to compare the points price with the cash rate for the same room. Divide the cash price by the number of points to see what each point is worth on that stay, and save your points for stays where they stretch furthest, typically at expensive hotels or during busy periods. Our guide to how airline miles and points benefit regular travellers explains this calculation in more detail.
Turning Bonvoy points into airline miles
Bonvoy points can also be transferred to more than 40 airline frequent flyer programmes, including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. For most airlines, the transfer rate has been 3 Bonvoy points for 1 airline mile. That means the card’s 2 points per £1 works out at roughly two-thirds of an airline mile per £1, less than you would earn on a BA Amex card or by transferring Amex Gold points. Where the card stands out is breadth: it is one of very few UK cards that can earn miles in so many different airline schemes, which is useful for topping up a balance in a programme you cannot otherwise earn in from the UK. Check the current partner list and rates before transferring.
Other Benefits
- Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis credit: up to US$100 for qualifying charges when you book direct with Marriott for at least two nights at these brands.
- Travel accident insurance: up to £150,000 on public transport when you buy your ticket with the card.
- Travel inconvenience insurance: cover for flight cancellations and delayed baggage when flights are bought on the card.
- Purchase protection: up to £2,500 per eligible item stolen or damaged within 90 days.
- Refund protection: up to £250 within 90 days if a UK retailer will not take back an eligible item.
- Global Assist, Amex Offers and Experiences, plus Plan It instalments on purchases of £100 or more.
The insurance is card-linked cover with limits and exclusions, not a substitute for full travel insurance. Read the documents on the American Express website before relying on it.
Is It Worth £95? A Worked Example
The figures below are illustrative round numbers, not quotes. Imagine someone who spends £12,000 a year on the card, including £1,500 at Marriott hotels. They would earn 9,000 points from the hotel spending and 21,000 from everything else, a total of 30,000 Bonvoy points a year. If they redeem those points at a rate where each point is worth around half a penny, that is roughly £150 of hotel stays, comfortably more than the £95 fee before counting status or elite night credits.
Now imagine a heavier spender who reaches £25,000. They earn the Free Night Award and Gold Elite status on top of their points. A single free night at a hotel costing £150 to £250 in cash would cover the fee by itself. By contrast, someone who spends £5,000 a year and never stays at Marriott hotels would earn 10,000 points and gain little from the status, and the card would barely break even.
The Downsides
- Only good if you use Marriott. The status and free night are worthless if you do not stay at Marriott hotels.
- High thresholds. Gold Elite needs £15,000 of annual spending and the Free Night Award needs £25,000.
- Dynamic award pricing. The points needed for a night vary by date, and Marriott can change pricing.
- Weak for airline miles. At roughly 3:1, transfers give fewer miles per £1 than airline cards.
- Foreign spending fee. Use a fee-free card abroad, even at Marriott hotels overseas, unless the extra points outweigh the fee.
- Expensive borrowing. The representative APR is 52.5% including the fee.
Marriott Bonvoy Amex vs Other Amex Cards
If hotels are your priority, this card is the most direct way to build a Bonvoy balance. If you want flexibility, the Amex Gold earns Membership Rewards points that can be moved to Marriott or to airlines. If you want Marriott Gold Elite without the spending target, the Amex Platinum includes it alongside several other hotel statuses, at a much higher fee. If you mainly fly British Airways, the BA Amex Credit Card will earn Avios faster.
Amex Gold: Representative 85.8% APR variable, based on an assumed credit limit of £1,200 at a purchase rate of 29.1% p.a. (variable) and an annual fee of £195 (£0 in the first year). Amex Platinum: Representative 685.3% APR variable, based on an assumed credit limit of £1,200 at a purchase rate of 29.1% p.a. (variable) and an annual fee of £650. BA Amex Credit Card: Representative 29.1% APR variable, based on an assumed credit limit of £1,200 at a purchase rate of 29.1% p.a. (variable), no annual fee. 18+, subject to status. Terms apply.
Marriott also offers Bonvoy debit cards in the UK through a third-party provider, for people who would rather not use credit. They have their own fees and benefits, so compare them separately.
How to Get the Most From the Card
- Pay in full every month by Direct Debit.
- Pay for Marriott stays with the card to earn the higher rate on top of your stay points.
- Track your spending year so you know whether you are on course for Gold Elite or the Free Night Award.
- Use the Free Night Award on a high-cash-price date to get the most from it.
- Compare points and cash prices before every redemption.
- Watch for Amex Offers at Marriott, which can add statement credits on top of points.
Our Verdict
The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card is a strong choice for regular Marriott guests who pay in full. Its 2 points per £1 earn rate, automatic Silver Elite status and 15 annual Elite Night Credits deliver steady value for a £95 fee, and heavier spenders gain Gold Elite and a Free Night Award on top. If you rarely stay at Marriott or care mainly about airline miles, other cards in our series will serve you better.
As with any credit product, approval depends on your circumstances and applying can affect your credit file.
